I described yourbestsugar.com to my family over Thanksgiving, and mentioned the topics we planned to include in our blog. My aunt thought that people would also like to hear about the experience of starting a website with one's spouse. Makes sense!
It turned out to be most interesting under deadline pressure, the day before our launch — lingering in hypoglycemia makes for a cranky, stressed out graphic designer. That would be me.
Working on deadline-oriented projects is usually stressful. All three of us have regular jobs, though Eric and Andrew are both self-employed, and have some flexibility. Maybe you know how it is with self-employment, though, in that you usually work more hours than you would at a 9-to-5.
With both of us being hypo at times during YourBestSugar development, Andrew and I had to create alot of space for each other. That's not just in a literal sense, but also creating the space to be able to ask each other to test. We can usually tell. I'm not naming any names, but someone might start getting a bit angry, impatient or touchy and has an anxious look on his or her face; the other can't make decisions and gets distraught, withdrawn and unfocused.
Our ability to empathize with each other creates a more resilient relationship. Of course, that could be true of any relationship.
However, it's easier to see that this stuff isn't personal, when you know you're doing it too.
